![]() And I’ve gotta say, when we talk about games that add that little extra detail, or that polish that really sells the game, Mega Man X is one of the first ones that comes to mind. The stages also have a lot of great detail that make them feel like real, lived-in places rather than just a series of obstacles to tackle before fighting the bad guy. Speaking of hardware capabilities, this game looks fantastic! X has a more detailed sprite and an edgier appearance than classic Mega Man. The upgraded capabilities of the SNES hardware also allowed devs to give the characters more detailed animations that just makes the gameplay feel smoother than its predecessors. These mesh so naturally with X’s move-set that I feel restricted when I go back to older games that lack these features. These are useful for both improving your character’s traversal and by giving the player more options for tackling combat, particularly the boss fights. ![]() Two new elements that add depth to the gameplay are wall-jumping and dashing. Where this game exceeds though is in small refinements to the tried and true Mega Man formula as well as an energized style. If you’ve played Mega Man before, none of this should come as a surprise to you. After you kill a Maverick, you take a weapon from them which you can then use to kill their friends. You have 8 stages to choose from, each controlled by a different Maverick, that can be beaten in any order you choose. Gameplay-wise, Mega Man X is very similar to previous Mega Man titles. A Maverick named Sigma has gathered together a group of rogue robots and took over the world and only X can stop them. X is a Maverick Hunter, a special robot operative who hunts down renegade robots, aptly called Mavericks. Releasing in January 1994 in the US, Mega Man X was Capcom’s attempt at breathing new life into Mega Man, and boy did they ever! The game is set about 100 years after the mainline series and you play as a new character named X. I mean, wouldn’t you after 6 mainline titles in only 7 years plus a handful of Gameboy games? Capcom was looking for a way to reinvigorate the aging Mega Man franchise and the new Super Nintendo console was just the way to do it.
